What a recruiter actually reads first
Recruiters spend six to ten seconds on the first pass of a resume. They read three things: your latest title, the name of the company you worked at, and the one number that shows business impact. Everything else is a follow-up.
If those three things are strong, they will read the rest. If they are weak, the rest never gets read. Design your resume around that reality.
The one-page structure that works
A tight one-page resume with these seven blocks converts best for entry to mid-level roles in India:
- Header: full name, city, phone, email, LinkedIn — nothing else.
- One-line summary: role + years + a single number of impact.
- Experience: 3–5 bullets per role, each starting with a strong verb.
- Projects: 2–3 recent projects with tech and outcome.
- Education: degree, institute, year — no marks unless you are a fresher.
- Skills: only what you can defend in an interview.
- Awards / certifications: only if directly relevant.
Six lines that make recruiters shortlist you
Rewrite these six lines until they are sharp. They are the top-of-fold of your resume.
- The summary line (25 words, one metric).
- The most recent job title and its bullet-one.
- The most recent job bullet-two (a business number).
- One award or certification line.
- The top project line.
- The GitHub / portfolio / Behance / Kaggle link in the header.
ATS: what to keep and what to drop
Most large Indian employers use an Applicant Tracking System. Keep your resume a single-column .pdf. Drop photos, tables, icons and graphics — they break ATS parsing. Use standard section headings (Experience, Education, Skills) so the parser can find them.
