Every PDF page has a /Rotate entry in its metadata that tells readers to display the content at 0, 90, 180 or 270 degrees. Our tool reads the current /Rotate value for every page you have selected, adds your chosen rotation modulo 360, and writes the value back. The page contents themselves are never modified. This means the resulting file is essentially the same size as the input, and any downstream automation (OCR, e-signing, indexing) continues to work exactly as before.
This contrasts with rotation approaches that rasterize pages to images and re-embed them — those approaches inflate file size, break OCR and lose vector fidelity. Rotate PDF deliberately avoids that.
PDF conventions rotate clockwise, so a 90° rotation moves the top of the page to the right edge. If your scan is sideways with the top to the right, you want 270° (or equivalently, -90°) to bring the content upright. When in doubt, try 90° first, preview, and adjust. Because the operation is instant and free, iterating is painless.
By default the rotation is applied to every page. If your document mixes portrait and landscape content — for instance a report with a landscape appendix — you can restrict the rotation to specific pages using standard notation such as "5, 8-10, 12". Ranges can be given in any order and may overlap; the tool consolidates them internally into a sorted, unique set of pages.
For complex documents you may need to run two rotation passes: for example, rotate pages 1–4 by 90° first, then rotate pages 5–6 by 270°. Each pass takes a couple of seconds and the output file remains structurally clean.
Because the rotation is structural, OCR-recognised text remains intact after rotation. That matters if your PDF will pass through ATS parsers, court e-filing systems, or accounting software that indexes text content. Some rasterizing rotators break this property; Rotate PDF preserves it perfectly. If you subsequently want to make a rotated version permanent (i.e. bake the rotation into the content stream), export the file through a print-to-PDF workflow in your reader.
