About this tool

Unlock PDF removes password protection from a PDF you legitimately own by asking for the correct password, decrypting the file inside your browser, and saving an unlocked copy. It does not attempt to recover, guess or crack unknown passwords — if you don’t know the password, the file will remain locked. This is deliberate: our tool is designed for legitimate unlocking, not for bypassing security.

Tips & best practices
  • The correct password is required — the tool does not attempt to guess or crack
  • For a lost password, contact the original sender or the software that produced the PDF
  • After unlock, use Protect PDF if you need to re-apply a different password
How the unlock process works

The tool loads your PDF using @cantoo/pdf-lib and passes your password to the security handler. If the password is correct, the file is decrypted in memory and re-saved without a security dictionary — that is, the output PDF has no password and no permission restrictions. If the password is wrong, the load step throws and the file remains untouched.

What is preserved

Because we simply re-save the decrypted PDF, everything is preserved: embedded fonts remain embedded, vector graphics stay as vectors, OCR text stays selectable, and metadata (title, author, dates) is unchanged. The only difference between input and output is the removal of the encryption layer.

What we do NOT do

We do not offer password recovery, brute-force cracking, or dictionary attacks. Those techniques are illegal in most jurisdictions for PDFs you do not own, and they are computationally expensive in ways that would not work well as a client-side browser tool anyway. If you have forgotten the password to your own PDF, your best options are: contact the person or software that produced the file, or restore an earlier backup that predates the encryption.

Privacy and legitimacy

The whole workflow runs inside your browser tab. The password you type, the encrypted PDF and the unlocked output all stay on your device. Because we require the correct password, the tool is safe to use on your own protected documents — it is essentially a convenience wrapper around the standard PDF reader’s Save-As functionality.

Privacy note

Your files never leave your browser. All parsing, page rendering and PDF assembly happens locally on your device using open-source libraries (pdf-lib and pdf.js). ilovedigital.in cannot see, store or share the contents of your documents.
