The first 90 days set your reputation for the next two years. Nail these five moves and your first review becomes a discussion about promotion, not probation.
Days 1–30: understand before you contribute
- Map the team: who does what, and who your manager trusts.
- Read the last quarter of documents your team shipped.
- Book 15-minute intro calls with 8–10 people outside your team.
- Write down every process you learn — this becomes your onboarding doc for the next hire.
Days 31–60: ship one clean thing
Pick a small, visible piece of work. Ship it end-to-end. Do not overthink scope — a well-shipped small thing beats a half-shipped big thing every time.
Days 61–90: set up the loop
By month three you should have a weekly 1:1 with your manager, a written list of what you delivered, and a written list of what you want to work on next. That triangle is what promotions come out of.
Frequently asked questions
When can I ask for more work?
After you have shipped one thing end-to-end. That is your permission slip to ask for scope.
Should I say no to overtime as a fresher?
Say yes to short bursts around real deliverables; say no to permanent late nights. Protect your ramp.
